Zimplats embarked on the LEDs programme in 2013 which refers to the development of indigenous suppliers who are geographically located around Zimplats' mining and processing operations. Zimplats effectively partners with these suppliers by procuring goods and services from them through a structured LEDs program.

The Zimplats Smelter at the Selous Metallurgical Complex (SMC) is the only PGM smelter in Zimbabwe. The Smelter is located on the northern part of the Great Dyke, 80 km south west of Harare, along the Harare-Bulawayo highway. The Zimplats operations begin at Ngezi Platinum Mine, which is a 1.5 Mt/a opencast and 0.7 Mt/a underground mine.

Zimplats commenced production at the Ngezi opencast mine in December 2001. However, due to the increase in opencast contractor mining costs, Zimplats decided to reduce the volume of opencast tonnes mined replacing them with underground tonnage from the Portal 2 underground mine which employs the conventional bord and pillar mining method.

Zimplats Boards of Directors have given their respective approvals to proceed with the development of the US$264 million Mupani Mine (Portal 6) at Zimplats. The new underground mining complex will replace production from Rukodzi Mine and Ngwarati Mine once they are mined out and closed. Project highlights and key assumptions:

Although Ngezi mining operations are highly mechanised, they still rely on an extremely large workforce. Zimplats has a direct payroll of 2,500 responsible for all mining and processing activities, with an indirect workforce of another 1,500 employed by suppliers/contractors that provides a variety of services to the business.

11-03-2020· Zimplats has in place two operating flotation plants at Ngezi Mine and the Selous Metallurgical Complex (SMC), and a smelter at the SMC. Ore from the mines is processed by two concentrators (one at SMC and the other at Ngezi). The concentrator at Ngezi has two similar modules, which were commissioned in 2009 and 2013, respectively.

Its products include platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, and silver as well as base metals such as nickel, copper, cobalt, and chrome.
