A Pavement Rating System

MAPA commissioned ERES Consultants to evaluate the performance history of asphalt pavements with and without an aggregate base, and of portland cement concrete pavements on the MnDOT highway system. The results showed that asphalt pavements typically provide 40 to 60 years of service life and receive three overlays in that time frame.

HISTORY OF ASPHALT GRADING SYSTEMS

History of Asphalt Grading Systems 2 • Chewing - first mode of testing to determine asphalt hardness • Initially used for natural asphalts such as Trinidad Lake asphalt • Trinidad asphalt contains colloidal clay of volcanic origin • Solubility in carbon disulfide used to determine the purity • First sheet asphalt pavement using Trinidad asphalt - Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington,

Bitumen Asphalt Cement Grade (AC) – Asehbitumen

The AC grading is related to absolute viscosity at 60 c in 100 poises. Here are six asphalt cement (AC) viscosity grades: AC-2.5 (which is the softest grade), AC-5, AC-20, AC-30, and AC-40(which is the hardest grade). As a brief explanation, AC-2.5 is asphalt cement with a target viscosity of 250 poises at 60c. (250 are divided by 100).
