21-10-2012· Certainly it can be fixed. The cost will depend largely on the shop doing the work and the actual damage. That is hard to tell from pictures. The crack appears to have started as a saddle crack and may not be terribly hard to fix. The tail block/rib problem may be simply that the upper parts of the ribs came loose from the block when they cracked.

With a classical guitar, top removal is horrible because of the bindings and purfling, but from what I have seen on the internet removing a cello top is more straightforward, consisting of slow careful insertion of a knife to break the glue join.

This is a soundpost crack, repair, $4000. You can get this kind of repair done cheaper, but this is a serious cello, worth the money to fix. Forget everything written here about soundposts, the OP is not talking about a broken post, and these comments are not really well informed.

18-05-2010· It is a major repair, and it may change the sound/response of the cello (which is why instruments with soundpost cracks have reduced value). I'd guess it will cost at least $600 or more to fix, and a lot more if it is a better cello, as you'll want it done by a higher-end luthier. If it is a good cello, it is worth doing.

The rib cracks would be addressed when the top was off.

This is not necessary for every crack, but it was very helpful in this instance. If you have never poured a cast or brought level a stubborn crack, I don't really recommend doing this repair just yet, since those two things are the most important part of this process. Fitting a patch to a crack that is not level will ruin the instrument.
